TEAS Math: Calculator & Pacing Tips
The TEAS Math section gives you a limited amount of time to work through questions involving numbers, algebra, measurement, and data. Knowing the material is important, but managing your time also matters. ATI currently gives the TEAS Math section 38 questions and 57 minutes. The Math content areas are Numbers and Algebra and Measurement and Data.
Know When to Use the Calculator
ATI provides an on-screen calculator during the TEAS. Personal calculators are not permitted. A calculator can help with calculations, but don't automatically use it for every question. Simple calculations may sometimes be faster to solve mentally or on scratch paper.
Avoid Spending Too Long on One Question
If a question is taking much longer than expected, consider moving forward. Getting stuck on one difficult question can reduce the time available for questions you understand.
Review Numbers and Algebra
Make sure your preparation includes:
- Fractions
- Decimals
- Percentages
- Ratios
- Proportions
- Basic algebra
- Equations
Practice recognizing what the question is asking before starting the calculation.
Practice Measurement and Data
Also review:
- Units of measurement
- Conversions
- Tables
- Graphs
- Basic statistics
- Measurement problems
Pay attention to units because an otherwise correct calculation can produce the wrong answer if the units are misunderstood.
Practice With a Timer
Once you understand the material, practice answering questions under timed conditions. The goal isn't simply to work faster. You want to become comfortable recognizing familiar question types and solving them efficiently.
Final Thoughts
Good TEAS Math preparation combines content review with time management. Learn the math concepts, practice using the on-screen calculator, and avoid allowing one difficult question to consume too much of your available time.
