HESI A2 Vocabulary Study Guide
Vocabulary is one of the subjects included in the HESI Admission Assessment Exam Review. The current HESI Admission Assessment Exam Review, 6th Edition, includes a dedicated Vocabulary section along with math, reading comprehension, grammar, biology, chemistry, and anatomy and physiology.
Build a Personal Vocabulary List
Instead of trying to memorize hundreds of words at once, create a study list. For each unfamiliar word, write:
- The word
- Its definition
- A synonym
- An example sentence
Review your list regularly rather than studying it only once.
Learn Words in Context
Knowing a definition is useful, but understanding how a word is used can be even more helpful. For example, when you encounter a new word in a sentence, look at the surrounding words and determine what meaning fits the context.
Use Flashcards
Flashcards can make vocabulary review easier. Put the word on one side and the meaning on the other. Test yourself before looking at the answer. You can also create cards that include synonyms and example sentences.
Review Frequently
Vocabulary improves through repeated exposure. A simple routine could be:
- Day 1: Learn new words
- Day 2: Review yesterday's words
- Day 3: Add new words and review old ones
- End of week: Test yourself
Practice With Questions
Don't rely entirely on flashcards. Practice questions can show whether you actually understand the words and can recognize their meanings when they appear in context.
Final Thoughts
HESI A2 vocabulary preparation is easier when you study consistently. Build a vocabulary list, use context clues, review frequently, and practice applying new words rather than simply memorizing definitions.
