HESI A2 Study Schedule: How to Build a Realistic Weekly Plan
Preparing for the HESI A2 can feel difficult when you have several subjects to review and limited time available. Without a plan, you may spend too long on familiar topics while neglecting areas that need more attention. A realistic weekly schedule gives each study session a purpose and helps you measure progress before your exam.
1. Confirm which subjects you need to study
Start by checking the admission requirements of your nursing program. HESI A2 requirements can vary between schools, so do not assume that every applicant must complete every available subject. List the sections you need to prepare for, such as mathematics, reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, biology, chemistry, or anatomy and physiology. Next, rate your confidence in each subject. This does not need to be complicated: mark each one as strong, moderate, or needs improvement.
2. Set weekly goals
Avoid setting a vague goal such as “study biology.” Instead, choose a specific outcome. For example:
- Review cell structures and their functions.
- Complete 20 original practice questions.
- Explain the difference between mitosis and meiosis.
- Review every question answered incorrectly.
Specific goals make it easier to see whether a study session was productive.
3. Use a repeatable weekly structure
If you have approximately one hour each day, try dividing your time into three parts: - - 10 minutes: Recall previously studied material without looking at your notes. - 35 minutes: Learn or practise the main topic for the day. - 15 minutes: Check answers, record mistakes, and identify what to review next. You could assign different subjects to different days, while reserving one day for mixed practice and another for reviewing difficult questions. Adjust the schedule to your available time and exam date.
4. Include practice questions early
Do not wait until you have finished every chapter before attempting practice questions. Questions can reveal misunderstandings that rereading alone may not uncover. After answering a question, explain why the correct answer works. If you choose an incorrect option, identify the specific concept or reasoning error that led to the mistake. Keep a short error log. Revisit the same concepts after a day or two to see whether your understanding has improved.
5. Adjust your plan using evidence
At the end of each week, review your progress. Which topics are becoming easier? Which errors keep appearing? Did you complete the work you planned? If vocabulary is improving but chemistry remains difficult, shift some study time toward chemistry. Do not keep following a schedule that is clearly not meeting your needs. Practice scores can help you track progress, but one result should not determine your entire plan. Look for patterns across several sessions.
Final thoughts
An effective HESI A2 schedule is consistent, flexible, and based on your actual requirements. Set clear weekly goals, practise regularly, and use mistakes to guide your next study session. A manageable plan you can follow is more useful than an ambitious timetable you abandon after a few days.
