HESI A2 Reading: Finding the Main Idea

Finding the main idea is one of the most important reading skills to develop for the HESI A2. The main idea represents the central point the author wants the reader to understand.

Topic vs. Main Idea

A topic is the general subject of a passage. The main idea is what the author is saying about that subject. For example: Topic: Exercise Main idea: Regular exercise can provide several benefits for physical and mental well-being. The second statement communicates an actual idea rather than simply naming a subject.

Look at the Whole Passage

Don't automatically choose the first sentence as the main idea. Sometimes the author introduces the subject first and explains the central point later. Read the entire passage before making your decision.

Pay Attention to Repeated Ideas

If several sentences discuss the same concept, that concept may be central to the passage. Look for ideas that appear repeatedly in different forms.

Separate Main Ideas From Details

Supporting details may include:

These details support the main idea but are not necessarily the main idea themselves.

Try a One-Sentence Summary

After reading the passage, explain it in one sentence without including unnecessary details. If your sentence captures what most of the passage is about, you may have identified the main idea.

Eliminate Answers That Are Too Narrow

An answer may be correct about one paragraph or one detail but still fail to represent the entire passage. Ask: Does this answer cover the passage as a whole?

Final Takeaway

To identify the main idea, focus on the central message rather than one interesting detail. Look at the entire passage, identify repeated themes, and distinguish the main point from supporting information.
