HESI A2 Math: How to Solve Fractions, Decimals, and Percentages

Article

Fractions, decimals, and percentages are closely connected mathematical concepts that frequently appear in everyday calculations and standardized test preparation. For students preparing for the HESI A2 entrance exam, understanding how these three forms relate can make math questions easier to solve. Instead of memorizing separate rules for every problem, focus on learning how to convert between the different forms and recognize when each one is useful.

1. Understand fractions

A fraction represents part of a whole. The top number is the numerator, while the bottom number is the denominator. For example, \(3/4\) means three parts out of four equal parts. To simplify a fraction, divide both the numerator and denominator by the same common factor. For example, \(6/8\) becomes \(3/4\) when both numbers are divided by two. When adding or subtracting fractions, make sure they have a common denominator. To calculate \(1/4 + 2/4\), simply add the numerators and keep the denominator: the answer is \(3/4\). If the denominators differ, convert the fractions to equivalent fractions with a common denominator first.

2. Convert fractions to decimals

To convert a fraction into a decimal, divide the numerator by the denominator. For example: - \(1/2 = 0.5\) - \(3/4 = 0.75\) - \(1/5 = 0.2\) You can use a calculator during practice to check your work, but try solving some questions without one so you understand the process.

3. Convert decimals to percentages

A percentage expresses a value out of 100. To convert a decimal to a percentage, multiply it by 100 and add the percent sign. Examples: - \(0.25 = 25\%\) - \(0.6 = 60\%\) - \(0.08 = 8\%\) To convert a percentage into a decimal, divide by 100. For example, 35% becomes 0.35. Remember that moving the decimal point two places to the right converts a decimal into a percentage. Moving it two places to the left converts a percentage into a decimal.

4. Practice percentage problems

Suppose a student answers 36 questions correctly out of 40. To calculate the percentage score: \[ \frac{36}{40}\times100=90\% \] Another common question asks you to calculate a percentage of a number. To find 20% of 150, convert 20% to 0.20 and multiply: \[ 0.20\times150=30 \] The answer is 30.

5. Avoid common mistakes

Students sometimes confuse 0.5 with 5%, even though 0.5 represents 50%. Others add fractions without first checking their denominators. Slow down when reading each question. Identify what the problem asks you to calculate, write down the relevant operation, and check whether your answer is reasonable.

Build confidence through practice

Spend a few minutes each day converting fractions, decimals, and percentages. Then progress to word problems involving scores, discounts, proportions, and measurements. Keep a record of mistakes and revisit questions you answered incorrectly. This helps you identify whether you need more practice with conversions, arithmetic, or interpreting the question. Consistent practice is more effective than trying to learn every rule immediately before the exam. A strong understanding of these foundational skills can also support your preparation for other math topics on the HESI A2.
