HESI A2 Biology: Cell Structure and Function

HESI A2 Biology: Cell Structure and Function

Cells are the basic units of life, making cell biology an important foundation for many science topics. When preparing for HESI A2 Biology, it helps to understand what major cell structures do and how they work together.

The Cell Membrane

The cell membrane forms the boundary around the cell and helps regulate what enters and leaves. It is selectively permeable, meaning that different substances cross it in different ways.

The Nucleus

The nucleus contains most of the cell's genetic material in eukaryotic cells. It also plays an important role in regulating cellular activities. A useful study connection is: Nucleus → genetic information → cellular control

Mitochondria

Mitochondria are associated with producing ATP through cellular respiration. ATP is an important energy source used by cells. A common study phrase is that mitochondria are involved in the cell's energy production.

Ribosomes

Ribosomes are involved in protein synthesis. They may be found free in the cytoplasm or associated with the rough endoplasmic reticulum.

Endoplasmic Reticulum

The endoplasmic reticulum is a membrane system within the cell. The rough ER has ribosomes attached to it and is associated with protein production and processing. The smooth ER lacks attached ribosomes and is involved in functions including lipid-related processes.

Golgi Apparatus

The Golgi apparatus modifies, sorts, and packages certain proteins and other materials for transport within or outside the cell.

Create a Cell Comparison Chart

One useful study method is to create a table:

Structure Main Function Nucleus Genetic information and regulation Mitochondria ATP production Ribosomes Protein synthesis Rough ER Protein processing/transport Smooth ER Lipid-related functions Golgi apparatus Modification and packaging Cell membrane Regulates movement across cell boundary

Final Takeaway

Do not memorize organelles as isolated vocabulary. Study what each structure does and how the structures work together. That approach makes biology questions easier to understand.
