GED Math: How to Calculate Perimeter, Area, and Volume

Article

Geometry is useful for calculating distances around shapes, measuring surfaces, and determining how much space an object occupies. For students preparing for the GED Mathematics test, understanding perimeter, area, and volume is an important step toward solving measurement problems. The key is to recognize what the question asks you to measure and then select the appropriate formula.

1. Understand perimeter

Perimeter is the total distance around a two-dimensional shape. To calculate it, add the lengths of all the sides. For a rectangle, the formula is: \[ P=2l+2w \] Here, \(l\) represents length and \(w\) represents width. Suppose a rectangular garden is 8 meters long and 5 meters wide. \[ P=2(8)+2(5)=26 \] The perimeter is 26 meters. Perimeter is useful when calculating the amount of fencing needed around a garden or the border required around a picture.

2. Calculate the area of a rectangle

Area measures the surface inside a two-dimensional shape. For a rectangle: \[ A=l\times w \] Using the same garden dimensions: \[ A=8\times5=40 \] The garden has an area of 40 square meters. Notice the difference between the units: perimeter is measured in meters, while area is measured in square meters. This distinction matters because a correct calculation with the wrong units may still produce an incorrect final answer.

3. Learn the area of a triangle

The area of a triangle is calculated by multiplying its base by its perpendicular height and dividing by two. \[ A=\frac{1}{2}bh \] Suppose a triangle has a base of 10 centimeters and a height of 6 centimeters. \[ A=\frac{1}{2}(10)(6)=30 \] Its area is 30 square centimeters. The height must be perpendicular to the base. It is not necessarily the length of one of the sloping sides.

4. Understand the area of a circle

The area of a circle is: \[ A=\pi r^2 \] The letter \(r\) represents the radius, which is the distance from the center of the circle to its edge. If a circle has a radius of 4 centimeters: \[ A=\pi(4)^2=16\pi \] The area is \(16\pi\) square centimeters, approximately 50.27 square centimeters. Do not confuse the radius with the diameter. The diameter crosses the circle through its center and is twice the radius.

5. Calculate the volume of a rectangular prism

Volume measures the three-dimensional space occupied by an object. For a rectangular prism: \[ V=l\times w\times h \] Suppose a storage box is 6 centimeters long, 4 centimeters wide, and 3 centimeters high. \[ V=6\times4\times3=72 \] The volume is 72 cubic centimeters. Volume is used in situations involving containers, boxes, and other three-dimensional objects.

6. Choose the correct formula

Before calculating, identify the quantity being requested. If the question asks for… Use… Typical units Distance around a shape Perimeter cm, m, ft Surface inside a shape Area cm², m², ft² Space occupied by an object Volume cm³, m³, ft³ Some questions combine several measurements. For example, a problem may ask you to find the area of a rectangular floor and then calculate the cost of covering it with tiles. In such cases, solve one step at a time and keep track of the units.

7. Avoid common geometry mistakes

Students sometimes use the diameter instead of the radius in circle formulas, forget to divide a triangle's base-times-height calculation by two, or report area in ordinary length units. Another common mistake is substituting numbers into a formula without checking what each measurement represents. Write down the formula, label the measurements, substitute the values, and check the units before selecting your final answer.

Prepare for GED geometry questions

Create a formula sheet and practice a few questions involving rectangles, triangles, circles, and rectangular prisms. Then move to word problems that require you to identify the relevant measurements.
